It seems a week doesn’t go by without the news of another clothing giant either going bankrupt or closing stores. As a retailer myself, I have found myself wondering what is behind these retail woes. I decided, therefore, to dive into this topic for my August Wednesday Wardrobing series. In Part One, I will examine the issues that are impacting the industry. In Part Two, I will look at the benefits of shopping small, how doing so impacts your community, and ways you can help local businesses stay afloat. In Part Three, I will share the industry trends I observed while at market.

In today’s rapidly changing retail landscape, clothing stores face numerous challenges that make it increasingly difficult to keep their doors open. From shifts in consumer behavior to the rise of e-commerce, several factors contribute to this struggle. The Rise of E-Commerce

The convenience and accessibility of online shopping have significantly altered consumer habits. Many people now prefer to shop from the comfort of their homes, leading to a decline in foot traffic in brick-and-mortar stores. Consumers have busy lives, and e-commerce has enabled them to shop while attending sporting events, waiting in lines, or doing other tasks, further impacting time spent wandering through stores. Retailers must now compete not only with local stores but with global e-commerce giants that offer extensive product ranges and fast shipping. And, with fewer shoppers in their stores, some are loosing the game.

Changing Consumer Preferences

Today’s consumers prioritize experiences over possessions. This shift means that people are spending more on travel, dining, and other experiences rather than on clothing. Additionally, the trend towards minimalism and sustainable fashion has led many to buy fewer, higher-quality items, impacting overall sales volumes. Additionally, with the work from home trend, many professionals no longer need the same clothing wardrobe as they did when they went into an office every day.

Economic Pressures

Economic uncertainty, including inflation and fluctuating employment rates, affects consumer spending power. When people have less disposable income, non-essential purchases like new clothes are often the first to be cut from their budgets.

Supply Chain Disruptions

The global supply chain has been under immense strain, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Delays, increased costs, and shortages of materials have made it difficult for retailers to maintain inventory levels and offer competitive prices. Additionally. small retailers do not have the buying power of giants like Walmart and therefore cannot negotiate volume discounts. Competing brand to brand, they oftentimes cannot offer the same price as larger retailers.

Competition from Fast Fashion And Brands

Fast fashion brands, which quickly produce trendy and affordable clothing, have dominated the market. Their ability to rapidly respond to fashion trends and offer low prices makes it hard for traditional retail stores to compete, especially those that focus on higher-quality, timeless pieces. Additionally, many manufacturers are now competing with their retail partners by selling directly to the consumer. With lower overhead, manufacturers can oftentimes sell their product for less. If the retail store chooses to continue to carry the product, they must match the online price and settle for a smaller profit margin.

Increasing Operational Costs

Retailers face rising costs for rent, utilities, and labor. These expenses can be particularly burdensome for small, independent stores. The need to invest in technology and digital marketing to stay competitive also adds to the financial strain.

The Role of Technology

While technology offers opportunities for innovation, it also presents challenges. Retailers must continuously adapt to new technologies and consumer expectations for seamless, omnichannel shopping experiences. Those unable to keep up with these changes risk falling behind.

My February Wednesday Wardrobing Series is focused on the latest style trends for the upcoming Spring/Summer 20245 season. Last week, I covered the key color trends, and this week I am focusing on the most important style and fabric trends.

Mini Skirts: Skirts are getting shorter this year with the mini skirt trend. Whether you are dressing up with leather or sequins or keeping it casual with denim, make sure for professional settings that your skirt length is below your finger tips when your arms are hanging down.
Floral Prints: 3-D flowers, especially rosettes rocked the runways for this season but so did floral prints in everything from tops and dresses to pants and skirts.
Classic Button Up: Blouse lovers celebrate – blouses are still SO in! For summer, look for classic white, menswear blue, and linen and cotton styles.
Bows and Ribbons: Get feminine with bow details this season! You’ll find bows on blouses, accessories, waists and more. You’ll also see ribbons being used as embellishments.
Bermuda: Long shorts are back! Wear them paired with a suit jacket for a summer suit look and dress them up with heels and a blouse. Wear them casual for running around too!
Luxury jumpsuits: Monochromatic jump suits or tops and bottoms paired together as a set are trendy this season. This look is expensive and minimalistic. Expect full pants and long sleeves.
90″s Inspired: From baggy mom jeans cinched with belts and paired with ribbed tops to short and long overalls, the 90’s grunge vibe is back.
Modern Femininity: In addition to bows and ribbons, look for eyelet, lace, silks, and semi sheer fabrics.

In addition to these themes, you will also see short shorts, more low rises waists, and capris length pants.

Spring 2024 Color Trends

Oh the colors of spring….I can hardly wait! How about you?

The new spring arrivals are coming every day here at the store, and unpacking them makes me long for spring even more! Soooo, I couldn’t wait to start my February Wednesday Wardrobing Series that focuses on the most important Spring trends:

One of the things I love that happens each year at this time is the color transformation from the dark colors of winter to the bright and cheerful colors of spring. It is so refreshing!!

Here are the key color trends for this coming Spring and Summer and what I am seeing coming through my back door right now!

First of all, we need to go over the Pantone Color Of The Year: Peach Fuzz

This is a fresh approach to femininity that is soft, subtle and tender, all at the same time.

The key pops of color to up your style this season: From left to right, top to bottom on the picture at the top of the page

Horizon Blue: This is a light blue hue that is airy but with enough pigment to still pack a punch of color.
Strong Blue: Imagine the deep sea, and you will have captured this versatile and elegant color.
Bistro Green: This rich and earthy forest green is a comforting color and often used in awnings at your favorite coffee bistros.
Spicy Mustard: This is your pop of warm yellow for the season. Imagine a gourmet mustard display and you will have captured the richness of this color.
Chutney: Warm and deep, this brown isn’t as dark as coffee, but has a rusty elegance.
Sun Orange: This color reminds me of apricots or tangerines. It is zesty, citrussy, and adds an amazing pop of color to your outfit.
Fiesta: Think party in Mexico with rich, red accents, and you will know the bright and brilliant red that is this color.
Charlock: This cool and sunny yellow is a classic spring color and a breath of fresh air that is light and airy.
Burnished Lilac: This version of lavender is combined with grey to make it light and the ultimate pastel pop of color this season
Taragon: An earthy and herbacious green, this color pops your look like the color lime but without the harshness.

The key classic colors to look for this season are:

Brilliant White – a bright, crisp white
Boulevard – a deep asphalt grey
Moth – a light tan
Deep Well – a black, black
Blue Fox – a medium grey, similar to rain filled clouds

How To Wear Long Vests And Jackets

One of the fun new trends this season is long vests and jackets. When I say long, I mean at least mid calf if not almost to the floor. It’s a great new look, but it can also be intimidating to know how to wear them. If you feel a bit unsure, hopefully this blog will help you get up the courage to try!

One of the things I do at market is watch what the buyers are wearing. Here in western America, we don’t get too edgy. Trends are dialed down to a more conservative version. I have learned, however, that when I see a significant portion of women sporting a similar trend, it will be one that makes it to good old Wyo.

When I was at market in February, I watched carefully to see the different ways women were wearing this trend. By in large, most women paired their long cardigans and vests with jeans and boots. Several of them added a floppy hat to the look too, which was darn cute! Some manufacturers picture this trend with shorts and boots, but I think that look is harder to pull off than jeans. It is edgier and of course takes great legs. Have no fear, however, if you can’t quite see yourself wearing a long vest and shorts. At 44, I can’t see myself doing it either! The jeans option is very viable and would be age appropriate from 30 to 50.

This style is very Bohemian so when you are putting your look together, keep this in mind. As you can see in the picture, there is a crocheted version as well as a longer fringed style. I paired the one on the right with a denim shirt to bring out the denim blue tones in the cardigan but also because denim shirts are an important item for spring. You could add a white jean to this fringed cardigan, denim shirt combo and have a stylish spring outfit. Keep in mind the length of this jacket. If you are short, you will need to add some heels to get you up off the floor!

The vest on the left is actually easier to pair up. Wear it over a tee shirt or blouse in a natural tone and then add a washed out denim capris, boyfriend or ankle jean. Add some Bohemian sandals like a wrapped ankle wedge, some BoHo jewelry and a fringed purse. You’ll be one hot mama!
