What’s changing in fashion this fall—and how to make those changes work for your wardrobe.
Every season, the fashion industry introduces new colors, silhouettes, fabrics and accessories. And every season, women ask me some version of the same question:
“What’s in style this year, and how do I wear it without replacing everything in my closet?”
It’s a great question, and one we spent the entire month of September exploring during our Wednesday Wardrobing Fall 2026 Trend Report.
Over four weeks, we looked at the season’s most important color stories, changing silhouettes, fabric and texture trends, and the accessories that finish an outfit.
But here’s what I want you to understand before we go any further:
Knowing what’s in style is not the same thing as having style.
The goal isn’t to wear every trend. It’s to understand what’s happening in fashion well enough to choose the pieces that work for your body, your lifestyle and your personal taste.
Let’s take a look at the biggest takeaways from Fall 2026.
1. Fall 2026 Color Trends: It’s All About the Combinations

One of the most interesting things about Fall 2026 is that there isn’t just one color dominating the season.
Instead, we’re seeing a beautiful variety of rich, grounded neutrals, softer shades and vibrant accents.
Some of the key color stories include:
- Chocolate, cocoa and espresso brown: Rich browns are becoming important wardrobe neutrals, offering a beautiful alternative to black.
- Burgundy, wine and berry: These sophisticated shades bring warmth and depth to fall dressing.
- Winter white, cream and ivory: Lighter neutrals aren’t just for summer. They’re especially beautiful paired with darker fall colors.
- Gray, charcoal and graphite: These versatile neutrals work wonderfully with burgundy, blue and soft pink.
- Teal and blue-green: Rich blue-green shades add interest without feeling overwhelming.
- Blue in all its variations: From soft powder blue to sapphire and navy.
- Soft pink: A beautiful way to soften darker fall wardrobes.
- Red: A confident accent that can make even a simple outfit feel special.
The Wardrobing Lesson: Think in Color Combinations
Rather than asking, “What’s the color of the season?” try asking, “What new color combination could I create with pieces I already own?”
Some of my favorite Fall 2026 combinations include:
Chocolate + Sapphire
Gray + Burgundy
Cream + Teal
Soft Pink + Chocolate
Powder Blue + Charcoal
Winter White + Wine
Here’s your challenge: Look at the neutral colors you already own and try pairing them with a color you haven’t worn with them before.
Sometimes a new combination makes familiar clothes feel completely different.
2. Fall 2026 Style Trends: Fashion Has Shape Again

If I had to summarize the biggest silhouette story of Fall 2026 in one sentence, it would be this:
Fashion has shape again.
After several seasons of oversized, relaxed dressing, we’re seeing a renewed interest in waist definition, tailoring, intentional proportions and feminine details.
That doesn’t mean comfortable clothing is disappearing. It means we’re learning to balance comfort with a more defined silhouette.
The Updated Lady
One of my favorite trends this season is what we’re calling the Updated Lady.
Think collarless jackets, beautifully tailored blazers, feminine blouses, polished knits and well-fitting trousers.
But here’s the important distinction: This isn’t about dressing formally from head to toe.
Try a lady jacket with your favorite jeans. Pair a feminine blouse with a trouser. Wear a beautiful blazer over a simple knit.
The result is polished without looking overly dressed.
The Waist Is Back
We’re seeing cropped jackets, peplum details, belted pieces and more attention to the waistline.
But remember, defining your waist doesn’t necessarily mean wearing something tight.
A shorter jacket, a partially tucked blouse or a carefully placed belt can create definition without sacrificing comfort.
Wide-Leg Trousers Are Staying
If you’ve invested in wide-leg pants, good news! They’re continuing into Fall 2026.
The important thing is understanding proportion.
When you add volume on the bottom, consider creating some definition on top.
Try a fitted sweater, a tucked blouse or a shorter jacket.
And petite women, please hear me: You absolutely can wear wide-leg trousers.
The key is finding the right width, length and proportion for your frame.
The Wardrobing Lesson: A Trend Is an Idea, Not an Instruction
Before adding a new silhouette to your wardrobe, ask yourself three questions:
- Does this flatter my proportions?
- Does it fit my lifestyle?
- Can I wear it at least three different ways?
If the answer is yes, it may deserve a place in your closet.
If not, there’s no reason to force it. Watch the video replay here.
3. Fall 2026 Fabric Trends: Texture Changes Everything

This may have been one of my favorite topics from our September series because fabric is something women don’t always think about when they’re getting dressed.
We tend to focus on color and style, but fabric affects how a garment fits, moves, feels and looks on the body.
And Fall 2026 is giving us plenty of texture to work with.
Leather and Suede
Leather and suede continue to be important, particularly in rich shades of chocolate, cognac, burgundy and deep green.
Look for jackets, pants, skirts and leather-inspired fabrics that offer a similar look with different care and price considerations.
A leather-look jacket over a soft knit creates an interesting contrast between structure and softness.
Satin and Velvet
These fabrics aren’t just for special occasions anymore.
A satin blouse can be beautiful with denim. Velvet can be paired with tailored trousers or a simple sweater.
The trick is balancing dressier fabrics with more relaxed pieces.
Sweater Knits
From lightweight knits to cables, ribs and dimensional stitching, knitwear is playing an important role this season.
For those of us living in Wyoming, lightweight sweater knits are especially useful because they allow us to layer through changing temperatures.
Tweed and Herringbone
These fabrics fit beautifully with the return of polished, feminine dressing.
A tweed lady jacket with jeans is a wonderful example of mixing traditional tailoring with a more relaxed outfit.
Softer Denim and Scuba Knits
Fabric innovation matters, too.
Softer denim blends, including Tencel-based fabrics, can give wide-leg pants a more fluid drape.
Scuba knits offer stretch, smoothness and structure, making them particularly useful for women who want comfort without losing shape.
The Wardrobing Lesson: Mix Your Textures
One of the strongest Fall 2026 styling ideas is combining contrasting fabrics.
Try:
- Satin with sweater knit
- Leather with tweed
- Velvet with denim
- Suede with a silky blouse
- Cable knit with leather
- Lurex with denim
If an outfit feels flat, sometimes you don’t need another color. You need another texture.
Texture can also be a wonderful alternative to print.
If you prefer solid colors, combining smooth, nubby, soft and structured fabrics creates interest without adding a busy pattern. Watch the video replay here.
4. Fall 2026 Accessory Trends: Finish the Look

We wrapped up our September series with accessories because they bring all the other elements together.
And here’s the wonderful thing about accessories:
They’re one of the easiest ways to participate in a trend without changing your entire wardrobe.
Scarves and Brooches Are Back
If you have beautiful scarves tucked away in a drawer, it’s time to get them out!
Wear a scarf around your neck, over your shoulder or tied to your handbag.
Brooches are also returning, particularly on jackets, sweaters and coats.
You might be surprised how current an older piece of jewelry can look when worn in a new way.
Pearls, Statement Jewelry and Charms
We’re seeing modern interpretations of pearls, substantial earrings, cuffs, bangles and layered necklaces.
Charm jewelry is especially interesting because it allows you to express your personality through meaningful pieces.
And don’t be afraid to mix metals or combine delicate jewelry with something more substantial.
Handbags With Shape and Texture
Handbag trends include slouchy carryalls, structured totes, east-west shapes and interesting textures.
Suede, woven surfaces, quilting and embossed finishes can add dimension to an outfit.
A burgundy handbag with a gray outfit or a textured bag with a simple sweater and trousers can change the entire look.
Shoes With Personality
Look for kitten heels, modern pumps, loafers, tall boots and shoes with interesting color or texture.
And remember: Your handbag and shoes do not have to match!
A colorful shoe can be a wonderful accent in an otherwise neutral outfit.
The Wardrobing Lesson: Accessories Change the Message
Imagine a simple outfit consisting of black trousers and a cream sweater.
Add a structured handbag, pearls and loafers, and it feels professional.
Switch to a slouchy burgundy bag, statement cuff and colorful shoe, and the same clothes feel more expressive.
Add a silk scarf and kitten heels, and you’ve created another look entirely.
Same clothes. Different message.
That’s the power of accessories. Watch the video replay here.
5. How to Make Fall 2026 Trends Work for Your Wardrobe
Now that we’ve covered the colors, styles, fabrics and accessories, let’s put everything together.
You don’t need to buy a completely new wardrobe each season.
In fact, I would encourage you to start with what you already own.
Step One: Shop Your Closet
Pull out pieces that reflect the trends we’ve discussed.
Maybe you have a beautiful burgundy sweater, a tweed jacket, wide-leg trousers, a silk scarf or a pearl necklace.
Look at those pieces with fresh eyes.
Step Two: Try a New Combination
Pair two colors you haven’t worn together.
Mix a dressy fabric with something casual.
Try a shorter jacket with wide-leg pants.
Build an outfit around a handbag or piece of jewelry rather than choosing accessories last.
Step Three: Identify What’s Missing
After experimenting with what you own, you may discover that one carefully chosen piece would help you create several new outfits.
Perhaps it’s a great-fitting trouser, a lightweight sweater, a jacket with a more current silhouette or a handbag in a versatile new color.
That’s a much more intentional way to shop than purchasing something simply because it’s trending.
Step Four: Make It Your Own
Remember the three questions we discussed:
Does it flatter me?
Does it fit my life?
Can I wear it multiple ways?
Your wardrobe should work for you—not the other way around.
The Biggest Fall 2026 Fashion Trend? Personal Style.
If you’ve followed our entire September Wednesday Wardrobing series, I hope you’ve discovered something important.
Fashion trends aren’t rules.
They’re ideas.
Some will be perfect for you. Others won’t.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
We’ve learned that color can change the way we combine our clothes, shape and proportion can change how they flatter us, fabric and texture can add interest, and accessories can give an outfit personality.
But ultimately, the most important thing you can bring to your wardrobe is an understanding of yourself.
Your body.
Your lifestyle.
Your preferences.
Your personality.
Because knowing what’s in style is not the same thing as having style.
And at Fashion Crossroads, helping women understand that difference is one of the things we love most.
